This past Sunday, I played a round of golf at the Mark Bostick Golf Course here on campus. It was an enjoyable round, although no scoring records were being broken. The course was in decent enough condition. It was an average round of golf until I came to the par 4 16th. About 25 yards away from the green, just barely in the rough. was this yellow stripe of turf. I immediately went into Sherlock Holmes mode to try and figure out what had happened. I thought maybe it was done on purpose with an herbicide to knock back a weed that was creeping into the fairway, but I looked down and saw no remnants of weeds. Next I thought that maybe the guy who sprays the chemicals on the greens left his machine on as he drove away and sprayed this strip on accident. But then I asked myself, how would a chemical that is harmless to a green cause this damage to the rough. The numbers just weren't adding up. I still am not positive what could have caused this. There was a slight scent of oil, or fuel in the air. My final guess is that one of the machines used on the course had a leak that caused it to spray this grass killer in the undesired area. The jury is still out on this one though.
Were you able to figure out what went wrong?
